Microdermabrasion Machines - The Truth About Them

Microdermabrasion is growing massively in popularity. For example, from 2003 to 2005, there was a 26% increase in microdermabrasion procedures. In fact, now the shift is more towards home treatment products. In this article, I will discuss with you the different types of microdermabrasion machines, and how they work.

All microdermabrasion machines have one goal -- to remove the top layer of your skin, which is filled with dead skin cells. Most machines have the same type of design to accomplish this -- an electronic "vacuum" that spreads medical crystals across the skin, and also pulls used crystals from the skin, sucking up the dead skin with it. Usually, this is accomplished by a device called a "wand".

Typically, the machines will use one of two types of crystals -- either aluminum oxide crystals or corundum crystals. The reason why these two types of crystals are most commonly used is because of their rough and jagged surfaces, their hardness, they're inexpensiveness, the fact that there is no chemical interaction with the skin, the skin cannot absorb them and within them are properties that are useful with treating acne and blemishes.

There are a few microdermabrasion machines that do not use these crystals, but instead use diamond tipped or sandpaper tipped hand pieces to remove the dead skin cells. However, these are less popular because they are not quite as effective and they are a bit more painful.

Additionally, there are now microdermabrasion machines that you can purchase for home use, which usually come bundled in the kit. In this instance, there is an applicator pad that is attached to the head of the microdermabrasion machine, which is then dipped into a jar of aluminum oxide cream.

The applicator pad is then applied to the areas of skin which need treatment, and the machine is turned either on a high or low setting, depending upon the sensitivity of the skin. Typically, the crystal cream will be rubbed on the skin for two to three minutes, and then will be washed away from the face with normal rinsing.

What can you expect to achieve when using microdermabrasion machines? Many people report that it decreases the visible signs of aging, treats acne and gets rid of acne scars, returns the complexion of the skin to a healthy glow, reduces wrinkle lines and helps treat undamaged skin.
